An early-stage startup whose agent platform serves large investment banks is hiring a founding AI engineer to lead its AI work. The agents here handle workflows the banks consider mission-critical, and this hire will lay the foundation for a future AI organization.
Responsibilities
- Design and ship agent-based product experiences on the company’s platform
- Own the surrounding harness for each agent so it is production-grade, covering evaluation, safety guardrails, integrations with tools, monitoring, auditability and graceful failure handling, so every action can be traced and explained
- Collaborate with the founding team and fellow product engineers, connecting agents to the backend using Python APIs (Django or FastAPI) on AWS, and contribute to the UI design
- Build model-agnostic systems on frontier models from OpenAI and Anthropic, deeply skilled at prompt design, tool calling and managing context windows, while balancing performance, cost and maintainability
- Drive AI projects independently from concept through launch, and set up reusable approaches, tooling and ways of working for the future AI team
- Keep up with the field, trying out new models and methods and bringing in the ones that help
About you
- Four-plus years in software engineering (five to nine is ideal), with solid classic backend grounding
- One to three recent years spent creating AI agents that operate in production, rather than merely demos and prototypes
- Production Python backend and API experience (Django, FastAPI) on AWS
- At ease taking charge of unclear, high-pressure challenges on a compact team that moves quickly
- Plus: applied AI experience at a fast-scaling tech company and good instincts about the possibilities of AI
