JOB-1998
A fast-growing, seed-funded startup that builds voice and text-message AI agents for home-services businesses is looking for its first engineering lead. The founder-CTO wants to step back from daily code review and team management so he can spend more time with customers, and the new hire will run the engineering group and report to him. Upcoming technical challenges include scaling call volume sharply while keeping responses fast, growing from a calling product into a broader operating platform with CRM features, and building agents that test their own improvements against live traffic.
What you’ll own
- Lead the engineers, review their code and take responsibility for what the team delivers
- Make architectural calls for a latency-sensitive distributed system
- Establish engineering practices and processes, and mentor the team
- Prioritize tasks so they line up with business goals
- Keep coding yourself, roughly a quarter of your time
- Recruit a substantial number of additional engineers over the coming year
About you
- Has led an engineering team of four or more people inside a quickly scaling startup
- Staff-level or team-lead background with hands-on architectural decisions in backend, cloud and distributed systems
- Strong Python and Postgres skills; some frontend ability helps (the stack includes Next.js and Azure)
- Treats the engineering organization as a system, spotting bottlenecks and clearing them one after another
- Warm people skills, curiosity and close attention to detail
On-site in the San Francisco Bay Area, four days a week in the office with one remote day. Visa sponsorship and transfers are not available.
