JOB-1725

A company developing augmented reality optics is growing the in-house team that designs and builds the specialized machinery used to manufacture its next-generation optical components. The engineer in this seat joins a practical hardware team where precision mechanics, automation and very fine process control all meet.

Engineering tasks

  • Create bespoke manufacturing machinery, automated cells, fixtures and electromechanical subassemblies and see them through to installation
  • Modernize and automate inspection gear and fine-tolerance process stations covering fluid dispensing, curing and measurement
  • Handle high-precision positioning stages, actuation, bearings, drive electronics and motion along several axes down to the nanometer range
  • Coordinate with an in-house software group, machine shop staff, vendors and other engineering disciplines until each custom tool is built and operating
  • Expect about 60 percent of your time on design at a desk and 40 percent on bench integration, testing and debugging in the lab

Must-haves

  • At least five years as a mechanical engineer (fewer with a master’s) in which you personally designed bespoke machines and tooling rather than adapting off-the-shelf products
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD, with Creo preferred and SolidWorks or NX acceptable
  • Systems-level thinking and comfort owning an entire machine instead of one narrow component
  • Hands-on follow-through from drawings to machined parts, assembled units and validated systems
  • Working knowledge of GD&T, tolerance analysis, and design for manufacturing and assembly
  • Background in semiconductor equipment, factory automation, metrology, precision motion or optics is a plus
