JOB-1511

A fintech mortgage lender is bringing in its first Controller to establish accounting from scratch, reporting straight to the CFO. The ideal person has genuine mortgage accounting depth and the confidence to write policy when no precedent exists. Over time the seat is meant to widen toward wider finance responsibility and a team of its own.

Scope

  • Own payables, receivables, accruals and the month-end close, and make each close faster than the previous one
  • Handle loan-by-loan accounting between rate lock and settlement, covering funding tie-outs, warehouse facility activity, sale gains and investor settlements
  • Implement and document the controls needed for SOC 1 Type II, and prepare the business for audits alongside the CFO
  • Drive the move off a small-business accounting package onto a modern AI-native ledger, and look for manual steps to automate in the lending, funding and reporting stack
  • Produce reporting suitable for the board and for credit providers
  • Hire and develop accountants as the company scales

Ideal background

  • Seven to ten years in accounting, at least three of them hands-on in mortgage lending, preferably with servicing exposure
  • Familiarity with origination, securitization, servicing rights and hedge accounting; general debt, commercial real estate or proptech accounting is not enough alone
  • A current Controller, or a senior accounting manager ready to step up
  • Has led a close, an audit or a system migration end to end
  • Solid GAAP knowledge and real interest in AI and automation
  • CPA license is a plus

Hybrid in New York, NY (preferred) or the South Bay Area (Silicon Valley). Unable to offer visa sponsorship or accept visa transfers.
