JOB-1822

A venture-backed startup building production LLM agents that automate key workflows for insurers needs an engineering manager who stays technical to lead its AI agents group. Time splits at about sixty percent leading and forty percent building. The founders are engineers themselves, so the manager gets real influence over product direction and the chance to assemble the team from scratch.

Key outcomes

  • Expand the AI organization into three teams: infrastructure (routing and reliability), agent intelligence (evaluations, shared tooling, multimodal pipelines) and agent products (a customer-facing assistant and long-lived workflows)
  • Define the technical approach for agents that survive real production use where customer money is at stake, spanning multi-agent orchestration, model routing and dependability
  • Hire, coach and keep strong AI engineers, including the leaders who will sit beneath you after the Series A
  • Keep your hands in code and design, raising the standard by example
  • Push forward what AI agents are able to do for insurers as the domain matures

Experience that fits

  • Seven or more years in AI/ML engineering, including managing a team of roughly four to ten engineers at a venture-backed startup
  • Led a team that shipped production LLM or agent systems, and still writes and reviews code on agentic work such as tool use, planning, orchestration and evals
  • Recent engineering leadership at a well-regarded, high-growth AI or fintech company
  • Clear written and spoken communication, founder-level ownership and real enthusiasm for mentoring
  • A player-coach profile rather than a director or manager of managers

On-site in the San Francisco Bay Area. Visa transfers and new sponsorships considered.
