Staff Software Engineer, Billing and Payments (Consumer AI Platform)

A small, fast-moving startup offering an AI-powered app-building product to a very large user base needs a senior engineer to take charge of how it earns revenue. You would be the person responsible for its payments and billing systems from end to end.

What you’ll own

• The full mechanics of charging customers: pricing tiers, recurring subscriptions, feature access, mid-cycle adjustments, prepaid credits and single purchases
• A payments layer that works with many processors instead of one, adding alternative providers and local methods so buyers worldwide can settle in their home currency while fees drop
• Billing driven by consumption of AI and cloud resources, including metering, balance depletion and extra-usage fees, built on a billing vendor or in-house
• Payment and billing capabilities that the platform’s own customers use to charge their end users
• Dependable operation at scale: event handling, retries and reconciliation, using TypeScript, Redis, Postgres and Temporal
• Pricing and packaging experiments run closely with the founders

Profile

• Four to ten years as an engineer across backend, growth or full-stack work, tied to how a software or consumer product gets paid
• Live production work with two or more payment processors, plus consumption metering or prepaid-credit schemes layered over recurring plans
• Evidence of releasing billing and payment improvements that actual users depend on
• Readiness to own a mission-critical system independently in a very small team
• Bonus: a single abstraction over several processors, international payment methods, or pricing experiments
