Go-to-market roles at AI startups look different than GTM roles anywhere else. The product is often changing week to week, the buyer may not fully understand the category yet, and the person in the room has to sell value that does not always fit a standard pitch deck. Hiring managers know this, and it changes what they screen for.

Curiosity about the product matters more than a polished pitch. Startups are not looking for someone who can recite a script. They want someone who genuinely wants to understand what the product does, so they can adapt the message as it evolves, sometimes mid-conversation.

Comfort with ambiguity is not optional. There may not be a defined playbook yet for your role. Hiring managers are looking for candidates who can build the plane while flying it, rather than waiting for a fully formed process to be handed to them.

Ownership beats hierarchy. At an early-stage company, the person hired for GTM might be doing sales, partnerships, and customer success in the same week. Hiring managers are looking for people who are energized by that range, not candidates looking for a narrowly scoped role.

If you are exploring GTM roles at AI startups, ScrumAID’s recruiters have sat in these seats themselves, and can help you find a team where your strengths actually match what the company needs right now.
