At a Series A or B startup, every hire is a bet on where the next six months of growth will come from. The classic tension is technical versus GTM: do you add another engineer to ship faster, or another go-to-market hire to sell what you have already built? The honest answer is that the right ratio changes constantly, and most teams get it wrong in one direction or the other.
Overinvesting in engineering without GTM support means a great product with nobody driving pipeline. Overinvesting in GTM without enough technical capacity means a sales team promising a roadmap the product team cannot ship. Neither mistake is fatal on its own, but both slow you down at exactly the stage when speed matters most.
A few questions worth asking before your next hire. Is the current bottleneck building the product or selling it? Will this hire unblock revenue, retention, or the roadmap in the next quarter, or is it a “someday” hire? And does the team already have the operating muscle to onboard this person quickly, or will they spend their first month figuring out how the company works?
Startups that get this balance right usually treat technical and GTM hiring as one connected plan, not two separate headcount requests. That is the lens ScrumAID brings to every search, whether we are placing an engineer or a GTM hire, because we have sat on both sides of that table.
